Good Grief!

Good Grief, Charlie Brown!” was often spoken to and by that loveable cartoon character who seemed to be living life with constant loss and disappointment. It was an exclamation that perhaps we should take more to heart that we’ve considered before.

Our recent guest, Claire B. Willis shares in her book, Opening to Grief – Finding your Way From Loss to Peace that we should not hide from grief, but instead give it full expression. GOOD Grief.

Claire quoted Jamie Anderson: “Grief, I have learned is really just love. All that unspent love gathers up in the corners of your eyes, the lump in your throat, and in that hollow part of your chest. Grief is just love with no place to go.”

While leading bereavement groups, Claire has discovered many aspects of grief, and she shared some of her enlightened knowledge with us, even clarifying the decades long standard of death coined by Elizabeth Kubler-Ross in her well-known book: On Death and Dying in which she describes 5 stages of the end of life.

Elizabeth Kubler-Ross first wrote about the five steps people go through who are dying. Through the years, many have mistaken that theory to mean the five stages of grief. It’s not to say those stages don’t happen. But they don’t happen linearly. There is anger, there is denial, there is shock, there is bargaining, there is acceptance, but it’s not sequential.”

Claire B. Willis

Claire wrote her book to support people in knowing they aren’t supposed to be feeling certain things in certain stages of grief. Claire feels we’ve misrepresented the original idea.

The way YOU’RE grieving is normal.

Claire B. Willis

We think of grief as having a very particular face: sadness, sorrow, despair, depression, and hopelessness. But grief is also anger, rage, irritability, impatience, regret, gratitude, and relief.

Grief has as many expressions as there are people grieving.”

Claire B. Willis

Sometimes people judge other family members. When family members don’t act in ways we believe is expected, they may be accused of not grieving. Claire makes it clear it’s important we all recognize grief in the various forms it comes.

People criticize themselves for not ‘grieving right’. Don’t feel silenced or shamed by the way you grieve. This will add suffering to an already difficult time.

Claire B. Willis

Providing support to family and others who’ve lost loved ones helps them not to feel alone. Many times, it’s hard to recognize another’s grief when it looks so different from our own, and it takes strength and vulnerability to express our own grief when others may not understand.

Claire was clear to say that grief can be scary to feel, and that it comes in waves instead of all at once. This is a way our mind protects us from significant pain. She used a metaphor to teach us about the waves of grief.

If we try to look at the sun, we make a quick glance, then look away. We try again a little later and look as long as we can but turn away when the light is too intense for our eyes. Grief is often experienced in the same way. We can’t sustain the deep feeling of loss all at once.

Claire B. Willis

That wave of grief is often referred to as S.T.U.G. a Sudden Temporary Upsurge of Grief. You may burst out crying completely out of the blue weeks, month, or years after the loss of your loved one.

This doesn’t mean you’re going backwards. It’s simply S.T.U.G. Ride it out. It will be gone in 24 hours. Your grief changes in intensity, duration, and frequency. At first the loss causes a searing pain and your whole life is seen as grief. Slowly, different things come into your life, and it moves from a searing pain to a dull ache.”

Claire B. Willis

Think of grief another way….like a broken bone.

Jackie Bailey’s first broken ankle a day after surgery

A broken bone at first is very painful. You have surgery, wear a cast, go through physical therapy, and you walk again eventually. But on rainy days the ache returns to the bone. We all must choose at any given moment if we’re going to cope or deal. We can’t cope when we’re dealing, and we can’t deal when we’re coping. It’s a conscious choice we make.”

Claire B. Willis

Most of the time we don’t get the closure we’d like when a loved one is lost. Claire says that is doesn’t help to think of all the woulda, shoulda, coulda scenarios.

The last few minutes of someone’s live can often take on too much significance and overshadow the whole of their life. It we don’t get a chance to have the loving departure with our loved one we hoped for, we often judge ourselves and ruminate on what we could have done differently.”

Claire B. Willis

Claire suggests a better way to honor the life of your loved one is to take action which can increase our capacity to help ourselves and others who are grieving.

1. Writing as a refuge. Writing 3-4 times a week about our loved one may decrease depression. Start each entry with “I remember….” In this way you can recreate the life you had together.

You can also write letters to the person you’ve lost. Your entry in that case could be, “Here’s what I wish I could have told you today…” These can become memories for young family members who didn’t know the person as well.

Find your unencumbered voice. Set aside the censored voice we use daily. Writing allows us to be healthier, as we release those hidden feelings we can’t actually verbalize.”

Claire B. Willis

2. Kindness. People can be so judgmental of others who are grieving. It’s important to remember to simply be kind and know each person grieves in their own way. Claire shared a mediation (one of many in her book):

May I start right here. May I offer myself kindness and compassion. May I accept myself as I am.”

Be kind to yourself and others. There is a lot of private pain. Make your healing process a no-compare zone.

3. Restoring in nature. Nature asks nothing from us. We just take in what’s happening. Being in the natural world can help us rest. In nature we see the cycles of life, death, and rebirth which will provide a sense of hope.

Claire read a poem by Wendell Barry titled: The Peace of Wild Things

When despair for the world grows in me, and I wake in the night at the least sound in fear of what my life and my children’s lives may be,

I go and lie down where the wood drake rests in his beauty on the water, and the great heron feeds.

I come into the peace of wild things who do not tax their lives with forethought of grief.

I come into the presence of still water, and I feel above me the day-blind stars waiting with their light.

For a time, I rest in the grace of the world, and am free.

Learn to give your grief full expression and find a companion in Claire’s book.

Surviving your Tsunami

Imagine being in the path of a tsunami. A large wall of water towers over you and washes away the once-thought sure foundation beneath you. Being washed to and fro in the churning waves, you struggle for something, anything, to hold on to.

SurferToday.Com

Imagine as hard as it is to keep your head above water, and to dogpaddle until exhaustion nearly overtakes you, this may be a perfect situation. This may be the best thing which has ever happened to you.

Our recent guest, Maria Mantoudakis is the author of a new book: Tsunami to Greatness: Unleashing the Power of Self-Love and Synchronicity to Become the Best Version of You.

Maria survived a triple whammy tsunami:

1. January 2008 her mother passed away

2. Two weeks later she was laid off from her job

3. The love of her life broke off their relationship

Maria was drowning in the tsunami. Thankfully, a few angel-friends showed up to help her. She was inspired by others who survived tragedies like hers, and she began to recognize synchronicity in the events of her own life.

Despite the triple tragedies in 2008, it ended up being the best year of Maria’s life.

I found a job a thousand times better than the old one. I became a speech champion, achieved a top 10 percent award as an instructor with Dale Carnegie courses, and I finally returned to Greece  – a lifetime dream.”

Maria Mantoudakis

That’s Maria’s message: “Whatever you’re currently going through, it might be the best year of your life. Miracles happen every day and we miss them.”

We may not know it because of the little voice in our head, but we are perfect. Perfect, based on our purpose and what we are supposed to do.”

Maria Mantoudakis

If you judge a fish by how well it can fly, it would be a very bad fish.

Unless you were meant to be a flying fish…

Remember when you were a teenager, and you thought you knew everything? Now as you look back, you realize you didn’t know anything. Remember when breaking up with your first love at the age of 14 was the end of your world? Now it seems like an insignificant event.

We all have different versions of ourselves. We look back at those old versions and wonder why we did certain things. What if we could see who we’ll be after life’s tsunamis? We can get overwhelmed with what’s going on right now, and we don’t think about the better and more brilliant version of ourselves we’ll be after the current tsunami.”

Maria Mantoudakis

In Maria’s book you’ll learn to access your true self. You’ll learn how to jump into the next phase of life with peace, joy, and synchronicity. You’ll learn fear is an illusion, and gratitude is the cure to gain a different perspective.

By visiting Maria’s website (RecreateSuccessNow), you’ll receive : 5 Ways to Develop Self Love – Discovering the Perfection in You, a free eBook in which you can take inventory of your skills and talents.

Positively Zero

Zero has negative connotations, even though it is just a number.

Life is a zero-sum game.”

He’s a real zero, man!

Cars are lauded for going zero to 60 mph in seconds.

That’s a lot of fuss about nothing; or it’s all or nothing.

Start with a blank slate.”

We often zero in on something; or we zero out on everything. Most of us have zero tolerance for zero dark thirty, and ground zero is a moniker for a significant place of note.

Zero means none, nothing, naught, or nil. Zero is usually not an indication of success.

Until now.

Mabel Katz has now defined Zero Frequency as THE place to be, THE goal to strive for, and THE greatest source of peace and happiness.

Zero Frequency is the name of Mabel’s book, and its arrival on ground zero of a pandemic could not have been timed more perfectly.

Mabel learned the ancient Hawaiian art of problem-solving known as Ho’oponopono. (Those are o’s, not zero’s) It transformed her life and Mabel spent twelve years as an apprentice of the practice, leading to the birth of Zero Frequency®.

The ancient practice involved gathering the entire family, and, in the presence of a moderator, each member would ask the others for forgiveness. Hawaiian healer Morrnah Nalamaku Simeona updated Ho’oponopono for modern times so that it could be practiced alone.

Mabel Katz

The process of Ho’oponopono in today’s terms is to discover the divinity within oneself and to achieve complete freedom from the past.

So, what is Zero Frequency®?

Simply put, Zero Frequency® is our natural way or condition, who we really are. It is the magic way of living twenty-four/seven in inspiration, freed from the chains of all our subconscious programming and all our preconceived ideas, memories, and beliefs. When we are at Zero, we are our authentic selves, able to access our true talents and natural gifts.

Mabel Katz

Mabel explained that those who ascribe to numerology believe that numbers have vibrations. The number zero resonates with the vibrations of eternity, flow, and wholeness. It also represents choice.

Zero is the alpha, which is the beginning, and the omega, the highest. Zero is also the symbol of infinity, and it is believed that it brings us closer to God.

Zero is also the symbol of nothingness; we often perceive that to be negative in nature. That is so far from the truth! Mable claims it is in this nothingness that we experience an absence of all the memories, thoughts, beliefs, and actions that have held us back. It is in this nothingness that all answers are revealed.

Mabel’s book speaks to the heart. As you read it, you may find yourself slipping into the state of Zero Frequency®. You may feel peaceful and creative. Her book will take you on an inner journey and teach you how to choose to go back to Zero moment by moment.

It’s possible for you to be truly happy and fulfilled, and there is a simpler path toward what you want.”

Be Still and Be at Peace.

Susan Shumsky, author of many books, including two which we discussed on the show, was our guest on Feb. 25th!

The Big Book of Chakras and Chakra Healing and Third Eye Meditations are Susan’s most recent books, and so helpful for many reasons.

Would you like to:

  • Discover your subtle bodies and their purpose?
  • Learn about prana and how it functions in your body, mind, and spirit?
  • Gain understanding of kundalini energy and the chakra system?

Susan Shumsky is the one to provide the answers!

Her interview with us was “third eye opening” if you will, and she caused me to consider new ways to feel peace.

Susan offered the following meditation right on the show: (you may want to record yourself vocalizing this meditation, then play it back for the meditation practice)

Get comfortable. Close your eyes.
Take a nice deep breath. Breathe in, and let it go.
And another big deep breath. Breathe in, and release.
And a big deep breath of relaxation. Breath in, and completely let go.
Let go. Let go. Let go. Let go. Let go. Let go. Let God.
Peace. Peace. Be at peace. Be still and be at peace.
Perfect peace. Perfect peace. Perfect peace.
Be still and be at peace.
Become aware that you are going into a deep, powerful, and profound meditation as you take a deep breath.
Breathe in. And let it all go.
Know that this meditation takes you into higher consciousness, and also into a state of connection with Spirit and divine energy.
So take another deep breath to go deeper. Breathe in, and let it all go.
Imagine now there’s a beautiful divine light above your head filled with glory; filled with energy. The most beauteous divine light above your head.
This is the light of Spirit in whatever color you notice, or maybe no color, (whatever it is) there’s a beautiful, beautiful like radiant sun of spiritual light above your head.
Now imagine there is a ray of that light, which is now coming down through the mid line of your body.
A ray of beauteous, divine light comes down through the top of your head, all the way down to your toes.
And it’s a beautiful, radiant, pulsating light.
And that light begins to vibrate and radiate, and become more and more powerful. It begins to grow and expand.
It begins to radiate and vibrate, and begins to expand to fill your physical body.
That divine light is now radiating, vibrating, scintillating.
It is a beauteous divine light that is beginning to just quietly, easily, and effortlessly fill your entire energy field.
That light is now expanding, radiating, vibrating, filling, and surrounding your body.
It’s becoming larger and larger, and growing in strength and intensity.
That light is becoming so powerful and strong, and peaceful, and joyous, and vibrating and radiating, and filling you with greater and greater life force energy.
You are experiencing this beauteous, beauteous light that’s filling and surrounding you, and creating an entire pillar of light; that is encompasses your entire body and your energy field, extending outward, larger than the boundaries of this physical body.
It’s becoming so radiant, and vibrating into the atmosphere and creating love, peace, and energy that just vibrates all around you; filling you, surrounding you, lifting you, bringing joy and light and happiness (not only to you, but to everyone around you)
You feel yourself being caressed and bathed in divine love.
Divine love is now filling and surrounding you now.
You are being immersed now in an ocean of divine love.
You are being bathed in this beauteous ocean of pure love.
You are filled with the gentle, soft radiation of divine light and the beauteous, loving presence of the divine; of your own inner nature, your true higher self.
Which fills and surrounds us now with pure love.
And you just enjoy this experience of divine love, which softens you and fills you with compassion and kindness, and generosity, and charity.
And your heart is just expanding with divine love right here and right now.
And you give gratitude to God for this beautiful experience today of meditation.
You’re going to come out of meditation, but keep your eyes closed until I tell you to open them.
So, how you’re going to come out of the meditation is, you’ll just pretend you’re blowing out a candle like this. (Quick inhale and puff out quickly)
Just do that.
Coming forth from the level of spirit to the level of mind; knowing that your mind is now filled with this light and this love, and this gratitude you’re experiencing now.
And blow out another candle. Knowing that your body is filled with robust health, and well being, and relaxation.
Blowing out another candle, coming forth into the environment, but keeping your eyes closed.
Knowing that you’re aware of the space around you, sitting in a chair or wherever your sitting. Just being aware of your environment; the sounds around you.
And just beginning to come back, all the way out into the environment.
Now blowing out another candle. Coming all the way out into inward and outward balance.
Now just blow out another four candles, and then come all the way out into inward and outward balance, and then open your eyes.
Coming all the way out. Opening your eyes wide. Wide open with your eyes.
Now say this affirmation after me with eyes wide open:
I AM ALERT. I AM AWAKE. I AM INWARDLY AND OUTWARDLY BALANCED. I AM IN CONTROL. I AM THE ONLY AUTHORITY IN MY LIFE. I AM DIVINELY PROTECTED BY THE LIGHT OF MY BEING. THANK YOU GOD, AND SO IT IS.
