A Stroke of Luck, and That Sucks!

On December 14th, 2014, while walking with friends into a restaurant for dinner, Scott Schilling’s legs stopped working and began to tingle. He was suddenly disoriented, and things were spinning around him. Friends noticed his gray color and profuse sweating.

Scott went to the emergency room at a local hospital and was  misdiagnosed with a migraine. He was sent home. That night his head pounded in so much pain he cried out, “God, help!”

The answer Scott received was, “Get on your knees”.

God I’m choosing to believe your plan is to wake me up and serve others for the rest of my life. I need your help and guidance to do that. I was cradled.

In answer to prayer, Scott’s headache sub-sided and he had a restful night’s sleep. The next day he worked hard as usual and saw a neurologist as a follow-up.

Scott was surprised to learn he’d had a full-blown cerebellum stroke and consequently spent 6 days in intensive care. While researching these types of strokes, Scott learned he may not speak again; may not have balance again; and may not be able to drive again.

That was all unacceptable.”

Scott wanted to make sure other people know they can come through a circumstance when the odds may seem against them, and his fifteenth book emerged.

If you’re living, you’re going to take a hit every now and then. It’s not the events that count, it’s how we react to those events.

Regarding his near-death experience a friend commented, “Scott, I didn’t know you’d gone through that. What did you say to yourself after it was over?

Scott answered, “That sucks. What now?” The title of his book was born: That Sucks…What Now? Real World Solutions for Getting Through What You’re Going Through.

A stroke of luck and That Sucks!

Survivor’s guilt can come into play, as it did for Scott. He noticed everyone who’d had a stroke with their facial deformities and twisted limbs. “Why me?” He thought. “Why did I survive without problems? What’s the reason? What do I do from here?

Scott remembered creating his mission 11 years before his stroke: “To create a worldwide community of over a million people; cause over 100 million dollars in charitable giving; and impact 100 million people on the planet.

God’s plan and timing is perfect. You can believe it’s perfect, or you can believe the event shouldn’t have happened, but you can’t believe them both at the same time. Pick one and live it.”

Besides his amazing story and mission, Scott also shared during our interview the Four Stages of Competence:

  • 1. Unconscious incompetence: We don’t know what we don’t know
  • 2. Plausible deniability: You know that you don’t know. It’s decision time
  • 3. Consciously Competent: You know that you know. You decided to learn a new skill which you didn’t think you could master.
  • 4. Unconsciously competent: You know that you know, and it has become second nature. You operate on autopilot in that new skill

Since Scott is a trainer and coach, he clarified ways to mentor others:

Model from stage four but teach from stage three.”

“Leaders act differently than those who are not leaders” is a philosophy Scott shared.

Scott suggested we need more balance, and there are little things we could all do better. He urges us as a nation to return respect, honor, and dignity to the planet.

Respect is how I treat you; honor is how I lift you up, dignity is how we both feel after that’s done.”

Over the last couple of generations, we’ve taken responsibility from individuals and it’s not helping them. Respons-ibil-ity is the responsibility to respond. Take control of your life by taking responsibility for everything in your life.”

Three positions we often take are:

“It’s your fault” – blaming another“

I screwed up” – shaming ourselves

“Well…it was because…” – justification and making excuses

Changing a Diaper and other Actions to Take NOW

The interview with this morning’s guest on Life Mastery Radio with Todd Alan was “juicy, rich and fascinating”

Karyn Greenstreet, author of ONE ACTION NOW talked about her experience as a small business owner, and how she misunderstood the intentionality of being said small business owner. Her initial forays into business were chaotic; she lacked focus, and didn’t know how to plan strategically.

Karyn admitted to being one of those messy kids whose rooms were always littered with clothes, papers, and so forth. She realized that she had to break that habit when starting a business; and learning to be organized was necessary.

Now Karyn has written a book so all of us can learn from her mistakes, and avoid the common pitfalls of small business ownership. Through the contents of her book, we discover ways to be less distracted by the shiny objects all around us.

The first few important steps she mentioned in her interview are as follows:

  1. Get crystal clear on your goals, which includes identifying WHY you have each goal. When you’re not clear on what you want the outcome to be, you may experience a mental resistance to completing them.
  2. Compare your goals to your values. Ask yourself, “what will accomplishing the goal do for me? Will I be true to my brand, and my values by reaching each goal?”
  3. Recognize that a goal is not a project, it’s an outcome in the business.

This co-host felt assured when Karyn commented: “Some of us are not naturally hardwired for goal setting, but it’s a skill we can learn; and practice makes us better at it.”

I’m not a natural goal setter because it’s hard to envision an outcome. I’m a survivor, and I usually set my sights on “getting through the day.”

Karyn’s past experiences sounded a little like my current experience:

  • Feeling overwhelmed.
  • Unable to focus on one task at a time.
  • Feeling the need to check off boxes each day, but never really accomplishing anything.
  • Never sure where to begin working, and when to stop working.

In answer to some of these inefficiencies, Karyn was clear about getting our goals and tasks on paper, and out of our head.

“This will free up the brain for creative thinking and problem solving. Everyone needs time in business to stop ‘doing’ and look at your business as a CEO would. Step back, free up your mind and think of the big picture.”

A perfect, authentic business can be yours.

Karyn used a powerful analogy when talking about working with intention. She said, “no one wants to change diapers, but everyone wants a healthy baby.”

You have to do the grunt work to see the goal to fruition.

Our Amygdala has the job of keeping us safe. When we get fearful about failure, or success; worried how much work it will take to be successful; concerned about what people will think of us; or stressed about how our identity might change during the process of growth, the Amygdala sets off an alarm bell. It may convince us to shut down, walk away, or stop trying.

Karyn’s system teaches us how to make stretch goals and action plans so as not to freak out the Amygdala. With her one-step-at-a-time techniques, we can sneak up on the Amygdala and keep our creativity flowing rather than bottlenecking.

Being Uniquely Positioned to Choose the Brilliant Path

Early on in this co-hosts career, I worked for one of the best oral surgeons on the east side of Seattle. We enjoyed a healthy business culture with open communication and recognition for hard work and achievement.

A new partner came on board, and everything changed. A tremendous shift in the business culture created a rift in the communication and recognition we enjoyed. One of the changes the new doctor implemented almost immediately was a decrease in employee benefits.

It wasn’t long before the team became confused, since there had been little explanation of “why” the changes. Morale was dropping, and we requested a sit-down meeting so the doctors could answer questions and clarify their decision. We were delighted to learn time had been blocked out of the busy surgical schedule for the very meeting we requested.

Just as the meeting was to begin, the doctors slipped out the back door and went to lunch. Immediately the office manager came in to act as voice regarding the changes.

The manager attempted to mediate, but there was no resolution to our concerns. The team felt betrayed. Not only had we lost benefits without knowing why, our employers lacked courage to defend their decision.

Eventually, morale bottomed out. Myself and a few other “dream” team employees left.

If only these doctor-leaders had known about Claudette Rowley’s book, Cultural Brilliance!

As our most recent guest on Life Mastery Radio, Claudette made this co-host wish for do-overs at that surgical practice. She has developed a system to create brilliance in the culture of any organization by looking deep into the DNA of the business.

Claudette explained how a contrast between two cultures she worked in made her curious about how to change the toxic cultures of some businesses; and how to create a brilliant culture in every business.

A toxic organization has some, or all, of these characteristics:

  • Back-stabbing
  • Blaming
  • Bullying
  • Asking for more data, then not acting on the results

Conversely, a brilliant organization has these characteristics:

  • Potential is harnessed in people and systems
  • Adaptable to change
  • Low levels of stress
  • High levels of innovation
  • Reframe mistakes as opportunities
